Capstone Reflection: Challenges, Confidence, and Finding My Sound

As I have continued working on my DJ capstone project, this stage has been less about learning basic functions and more about confronting challenges and developing confidence. While I have made progress technically, I have also realized that DJing is just as much about mindset as it is about skill. Moving from simply practicing transitions to intentionally shaping a sound has required a deeper level of focus and self trust.

One of the biggest challenges I have faced is consistency. Some practice sessions feel smooth and natural, while others feel frustrating and uncoordinated. Beat matching Drum and Bass, in particular, demands precision because of its fast tempo. When transitions are even slightly off, it becomes very noticeable. At times, this has made me questions whether I am progressing quickly enough. However, I have begun to understand that inconsistency is part of the learning curve. Improvement in DJing, like many creative skills, comes from repetition and reflection rather than immediate perfection.

Another challenge has been finding my sound. While I am drawn to both EDM and Drum and Bass, I have has to think critically about what kind of energy I want my final mix to communicate. Do I want it to feel aggressive and high-intensity throughout, or should it build gradually? Should it lean more melodic or more bass driven? These questions have pushed me to listen more intentionally to the music I select. I am no longer just choosing tracks because I like them; I am thinking about how they connect to each other and what emotional journey they create when played in sequence.

Confidence has also been a significant part of this phase. Identifying myself as someone who is “becoming a DJ” feels different from simply experimenting privately. There is a level of vulnerability in committing to a final recorded mix. However, I feel I am beginning to feel more comfortable navigating Rekordbox without hesitation, and I am more aware of phrasing and timing when preparing transitions. Small improvements have helped build confidence, even if I am still very much in the learning stage.

Overall, this phase of my capstone has shifted from technical learning to personal growth. I am started to see DJing not just as a project requirement, but as a creative practice that requires patience, resilience, and self expression. As I move closer to strutting my final mix, I feel more prepared to combine the technical skills I have developed with a clearer sense of my musical direction.
