Capstone Progress Update: Building My DJ Foundations

Since beginning my capstone project, I have focused primarily on developing the technical foundations required to become confident in DJing. While the idea of creating a full drum and bass and EDM mix by April is exciting, I quickly realized that strong fundamentals are essential before attempting a fully structured set. Over the past few weeks, my main priority has been learning and practicing within Rekordbox and understanding how professional DJs structure and transition between tracks.

One of the first concepts I worked on was understanding BPM (beats per minute) and how tempo impacts transitions. Drum and bass in particular operates at a much higher BPM than many other genres, which makes timing and precision especially important. I have been practicing beat matching tracks within a close BPM range and experimenting with adjusting tempo manually rather than relying entirely on visual waveforms. This has helped me begin developing a better sense of rhythm and timing.

Another important part of this stage has been curating and organizing my music library. Rather than randomly selecting tracks, I have started grouping songs based on energy level, mood, and compatibility in key and tempo. This process has helped me think more strategically about how I want my final mix to feel. Instead of just playing songs I enjoy, I am learning to think about flow and storytelling through sound.

Overall, this stage of my capstone has been about patience and repetition. DJing is much more technical than I initially expected, but that challenge has made the learning process rewarding. While I am still developing consistency in my transitions and timing, I am building a stronger understanding of the structure behind a successful set. These foundational skills will be essential as I move closer to recording my final mix later in the term.
